What is Cold Calling?

Cold calling is the practice of phoning a prospect who has not previously expressed interest in order to start a sales conversation, gauge fit, and ideally book a meeting. It remains effective because a live voice conversation can qualify a lead and handle objections far faster than a back-and-forth over email.

The tradeoff is cost and scale: human cold calling is labor-intensive and connect rates are often low, so reps spend much of their day dialing rather than talking. Voice AI is changing this by placing and holding natural phone conversations at scale, then handing off live to a human when a call turns promising.

Cold calling is heavily regulated in many jurisdictions — rules cover consent, calling hours, and do-not-call lists — so compliance controls like quiet hours and opt-out handling are essential.

  • •Live voice qualifies faster than asynchronous channels
  • •Connect rates are low, so volume and timing matter
  • •Respect quiet hours, DNC lists, and consent rules
