What is Outbound Sales?

Outbound sales is a go-to-market motion in which your team proactively reaches out to prospects who have not requested contact — through cold email, cold calling, SMS, social messaging, and other channels — rather than waiting for them to come to you. It gives you control over which accounts you target and when, instead of depending on inbound demand.

A modern outbound program starts with a clearly defined ideal customer profile, builds a targeted list, and runs multi-step sequences across several channels. Success depends on relevance and volume together: enough targeted touches to get noticed, personalized enough to earn a reply.

Outbound is increasingly automated at the top of the funnel, with AI agents handling first touches and qualification so human reps spend their time only on interested prospects.

  • •You choose the accounts — not the other way around
  • •Needs a tight ICP so effort isn't wasted on poor-fit prospects
  • •Multi-channel outbound outperforms email-only in reply rate
