What is Speed to Lead?

Speed to lead is the elapsed time between a prospect showing interest — filling out a form, requesting a demo, replying to an ad — and your first meaningful response. It is one of the strongest predictors of whether that lead converts, because interest and attention decay quickly after the moment of intent.

Studies consistently find that responding within the first five minutes materially improves the odds of connecting and qualifying versus waiting an hour or a day. Yet most teams take far longer, especially outside business hours, which is where AI responders close the gap by replying instantly at any time.

Measuring speed to lead means tracking median and 90th-percentile response times, not just averages, since a few very slow responses often hide in a good-looking mean.

  • •Aim to make first contact within 5 minutes of inbound intent
  • •After-hours coverage is where most teams lose leads
  • •Track median and p90 response time, not just the average
