What is Cold Email?

A cold email is an unsolicited message sent to a prospect with whom you have no prior relationship, with the goal of starting a sales conversation. Unlike spam, an effective cold email is targeted and relevant: it reaches a specific person who fits your ideal customer profile, references something specific about them, and makes a clear, low-friction ask.

Cold email works at scale because it is asynchronous and cheap, but it lives or dies on deliverability and relevance. Sending too many, from a poorly warmed domain, or with generic copy will hurt sender reputation and land you in spam. In many regions, cold email is also regulated — you generally must identify yourself and offer a way to opt out.

The strongest cold email programs keep volume per inbox low, personalize the opening, and pair email with other channels so a single unanswered message isn't the end of the conversation.

  • •Keep per-inbox volume low and warm domains before scaling
  • •Personalize the first line; keep the ask small and specific
  • •Must comply with CAN-SPAM/GDPR — identify yourself and allow opt-out
