What is Sales Funnel?

A sales funnel is a model of the buyer's journey from first awareness through to purchase, drawn as a funnel because the number of prospects shrinks at each successive stage — many become aware, fewer engage, fewer still qualify, and only some buy. It gives teams a shared map for where prospects are and what should happen next.

The funnel's value is diagnostic: by measuring how many prospects pass from one stage to the next, you can find the leaky stage that's costing you deals and focus effort there instead of guessing. A funnel that converts poorly at the top needs better targeting; one that leaks at the bottom needs better closing.

Where the funnel describes stages and conversion, pipeline describes the specific live deals sitting within those stages — the two are complementary views of the same motion.

  • •Stages narrow from awareness to purchase
  • •Use stage-to-stage conversion to find the leak
  • •Complements pipeline, which tracks the live deals inside it
